Range Cards

Periodically I see queries and comments on RFC and elsewhere as to the feasibility of shooting a .22LR rifle at "longer" distances . . . many seem somewhat credulous that these "toys" can even be used for anything other than 25 yard shooting "off a bench" !!     Well . . . although it is not common practice these days, the lowly .22 rifle is a viable device for shooting out to a considerable distance with a surprising degree of accuracy.  In the "good old days" . . . some 30 -60 years ago . . . 200 yard target matches were relatively common around the world . . . NRA still lists their A-21 200 yard target as a standard in the Smallbore Rifle Handbook.

So . . . for those who need a little encouragement to expand their rimfire shooting capabilities, I have prepared a couple of sample Range Cards showing typical "come-ups", plus windage and leads for both Standard- and High-Velocity ammo.    Please note that this data is not for any specific brand or series of ammo, but rather a generic composite based upon the majority of typical varieties available in those two categories, and using 40 grain, round-nosed bullets.

Now . . . when using the data in these tables you will find that it will get your shots "On Paper" with with a deviation that will result from using your specific ammo in your specific rifle . . . the windage drift tables are for a steady 10mph crosswind . . . the lead data is for a target moving crossways at a steady 10mph.    If you should happen to know the exact Muzzle Velocity and Ballistic Coefficient of your chosen brand, then similar cards can be prepared using the analytical methods outlined by JBM in his excellent online trajectory analysis programmes.

For those members of the CRC Smallbore Rifle family who would like a copy of these tables, I have prepared a limited supply of laminated double-sided Range Cards for your shooting kit.     Check with me at your next CRC event.    Enjoy !
